One EASY step to make your iPhone videos look more "Film Like"

Film your next iPhone video like the pros! This one easy step will transform the way your videos are captured. In this article, we are going to touch on the basics of video frame rates and how to change your iPhone to shoot video in a more filmic style.

What is Frame Rate (FPS)?

Video cameras record motion as a series of images that are then played back to show motion. A video's frame rate per second (FPS for short) is the number of frames or images that appears within a given second.

What are some common Frame Rates and Uses?

There are a variety of different frames rates which are used for a variety of different reasons. Looking specifically at the iPhone Pro, we see the following:

  • 24fps (4k only) - This is considered the "classic" or "standard" frame rate. It allows for a slight motion blur which gives off a more filmic style.

  • 30fps (720p, 1080p, 4k) - This is the iPhone default record mode. 30fps allows for smoother motion when compared to 24fps.

  • 60fps (720p, 1080p, 4k) - Used for Slo-mo and any situation in which you want to be able to slow down motion in post-production, like Sports, Action or Wildlife.

  • 120fps (1080p only) - Used for Slo-mo

  • 240fps (720p, 1080p) - Used for Slo-mo

How to change your iPhone to shoot 24fps

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Scroll down and click on Camera.

3. Click on Record Video.

4. Select 4K at 24 fps (High Efficiency)

That's it! Your iPhone will now, by default, record video in 4K 24 fps. Repeat this process if you ever want to experiment with different frame rates.
